The cost of an unplanned estate

When you die, the tax bill arrives all at once.

Canada has no inheritance tax, but your estate still pays. Your final return treats your assets as if they were sold, and your heirs wait for probate before they receive what passes through your will.

Capital gains on what you own

Investment properties, portfolios and private company shares are deemed sold. In Ontario the gain is taxed at up to 26.76% in 2026.

Registered plans become income

Unless they roll over to a spouse or dependant, RRSPs and RRIFs are taxed as income at up to 53.53%.

Probate fees and delays

Ontario’s estate administration tax is $15 per $1,000 above $50,000, and assets in your will can stay frozen until probate is granted.

The second death

Assets usually pass to a spouse tax-deferred. The full bill comes due at the second death, and your children settle it.

Outside the willLife insurance and segregated funds with named beneficiaries pay out directly, with no probate fees.

Estate planning & wealth transfer

Keep your estate whole, and your family provided for.

Every plan starts with a projection of what your estate will owe and when. We then design coverage and structures around your goals, and coordinate them with your accountant and lawyer.

  • A clear projection of the tax and probate your estate will face
  • Tax-free liquidity, exactly when your estate needs it
  • Fair inheritances for every child, including when assets can’t be split

Preserve

Keep the estate whole

  • Estate preservation insurance

Permanent life insurance sized to your projected tax at death, so your heirs never have to sell property or shares to pay it.

  • Joint last-to-die coverage

One policy on two lives that pays at the second death, when the tax bill comes due. Often more cost-effective than two policies.

  • Probate-efficient investing

Segregated funds and policies with named beneficiaries pass outside your will, avoiding estate administration tax.

  • Tax-sheltered growth

Exempt permanent policies grow without annual tax, building cash value for retirement and a larger benefit for your heirs.

Transfer

Pass wealth to the next generation

  • Multigenerational policies

Permanent coverage on a child or grandchild, paid up in 10 or 20 years, with cash value that can later transfer to them.

  • Estate equalization

When one child inherits the business or the family property, insurance creates an equal inheritance for the others.

  • Estate freeze funding

When your accountant and lawyer freeze your company’s value, insurance covers the tax on the frozen shares.

  • Charitable legacy

Name a charity as beneficiary or donate a policy. The donation credit can offset tax owing at death.

Who we work with

Advice for families with more at stake.

Families

Significant estates

Real estate, investment portfolios and registered plans that will face tax at death.

Owners

Business owners

Incorporated owners planning for succession, partner buyouts and surplus corporate funds.

Professionals

Incorporated professionals

Physicians, dentists, lawyers, engineers and consultants with retained earnings in a professional corporation.

Investors

Real estate investors

Owners of rental and investment properties carrying large unrealized capital gains.

Retirement

Retirees and pre-retirees

Converting RRSPs to RRIFs and deciding what each child will receive.

Generations

Multigenerational families

Parents and grandparents planning a legacy, including families bringing loved ones to Canada.

For business owners

Turn corporate wealth into a tax-efficient legacy.

For incorporated owners and professionals, the right structure can move surplus funds out of taxable investments and protect the business you’ve built.

Corporate-owned insurance

Shift surplus funds into a tax-sheltered policy. At death, much of the benefit can reach shareholders tax-free through the capital dividend account.

Buy-sell and succession

Fund your shareholders’ agreement so partners can buy a deceased owner’s shares and the family receives fair value.

Key person coverage

Protect the business from the loss of an owner or key employee, and keep lenders and clients confident.

Immediate financing

Pair a corporate-owned permanent policy with a collateral loan, so capital stays invested in your business.

  • Move funds from low-tax to no-tax zones, and minimize the tax you pay
  • Tax-free retirement and estate funding
  • Capital gains tax funding, so the bill never forces a sale
